An Irishman 1914

„(…) in March 1914, I started this portrait of a man who had never spoken to me. He was rather shy and seemed as if in perpetual daze, but he often visited Profesosor Mulligan’s class just to see how I progressed with my sculpture.
(…)
He posed for me for two afternoons and, because he brought such a heavy mood into the room whenever he visited, I finished the oversized sculpture without his presence.”
