About the Master

Who was Stanisław Szukalski?

There is perhaps no more insidious question, for which the answer will always be inexhaustible.

Stanisław Szukalski was born with a creativity that life could not suppress. The years in which he existed and created, and their extraordinary number (94! years), made him a sculptor, illustrator, painter, photographer, architect, champion of Slavic culture, philosopher, writer, playwright, traveler, historian, ethnologist, anthropologist, and anthropolinguist. Living at the turn of two centuries, he witnessed the enormous transformations that the world around him was undergoing. He was in constant motion, living almost simultaneously on two continents.

About Us

The Stanisław Szukalski Museum in Gdynia was transformed from the private collection of Mr. Krzysztof Ziemann.

The museum’s mission is twofold. On one hand, we wish to build a monument of sorts to the Master. To infect with our admiration, to sensitize both to the genius of his craft and to properly emphasize his unlimited imagination.
On the other hand, so that Szukalski does not get lost among the numerous pages of history, we want to build stairs to the pedestal he deserves. We want to make art truly accessible and broaden the horizons of reality as perceived by all of us.

We believe that insight into the entirety of Stanisław Szukalski’s life and work will allow the viewer to truly love his art.

We want to inspire artists, regardless of whether they work with the blessing of educational institutions or merely nurture their talent in the privacy of their homes.

Collection

Sculptures

Stanisław Szukalski created many exceptional sculptures, reflecting his extraordinary talent, inspired by Slavic mythology, Polish culture, pre-Columbian style, and global symbolism.

Drawings

Szukalski’s drawings were characterized by precision and detail. The artist created both realistic, though highly stylized portraits, as well as more abstract compositions dominated by motifs inspired by ancient mythology and cultures. His sketches were often very complex, filled with intricate details, demonstrating deep knowledge of anatomy, as well as artistic imagination.
